Main Street shines with activities, cars during Canal Festival

COSHOCTON -- Roger Garrison caused a stir as he traveled through town in a limousine bearing the presidential seal.
"A lot of people are fascinated by it, especially in small towns," he said.
Garrison traveled from Reynoldsburg on Saturday to place a special entry in the 12th annual Fabulous '50s Car and Truck Show during the Coshocton Canal Festival. He drove into Coshocton in his Cadillac DTS presidential limousine, which was used by former President George W. Bush.
"I bought it for $12,000 last October in Crawford, Texas, when it was up for auction," Garrison said. "I really didn't do too much too it except replace the back carpet. Otherwise it looks the way it did when I bought it."
The back doors bear the presidential seal, American flags fly on the front, and anyone who peeks inside can catch a glimpse of a cardboard cut-out of Bush. Music such as "Hail to the Chief" plays from the interior.
Garrison said he plans to take friends to an upcoming concert in style, but the limo primarily is just for show. He said he's entered the vehicle in several car shows, earning a few trophies along the way.
"It's nice to get a trophy, but that's not why I do it," he said. "I like talking to people and answering their questions."
Katie Seward's heart was warmed to see participation from drivers such as Garrison.
"We've got about 83 cars and trucks registered, so it's a good turnout," she said. "Last year we had about 60. This is a great thing. We appreciate the support of the community, prize and trophy sponsors, and it's nice to get out and have our presence known."
Seward is a community educator with First Step Family Violence Intervention Services. Previously hosted by the Towne Centre Association, this was the third year proceeds from the car show have gone to benefit First Step's programs, such as individual and group support, a shelter for people in need and case management.
Strolling through Main Street, John and Charlene Johnson, of Tampa, Fla., were surprised to see the limo sitting among the classic Chevrolets and fancy Fords near Sprint Print.
"I go to all the car shows, and I love this," John said. "It's a great show, and great weather."
The Johnsons made their way through town to take in a host of other vehicles and the additional events drawing people to the city's hub.
One area sectioned off along Main Street is called Canal Mania, sponsored by Coshocton Christian Tabernacle. The area features children's games and activities. The courtsquare grounds were filled with many food and arts and crafts vendors selling everything from jewelry to home decor.
Glancing at the variety of festivities, Jenny Phillabaum had a difficult time choosing a starting point.
"It's something fun to do, and I wanted to bring my little niece out to see how she liked it," the Coshocton resident said. "I've been to this before, and it's become a nice summer tradition."
