TIP: When To Visit Calistoga Vinaries Everyone wants to come to Calistoga or Napa in Summer, but Summer brings crowds that will remind you of Christmas at Costco. Unless you like standing in lines, fighting for a spot at the tasting bar, and sky-high hotel rates, avoid Summer.

The best time to visit Calistoga is Fall, meaning Sept to October.  This is “crush” time when they harvest the grapes.  You want to see a winery in action, you come in Fall. November is also nice because the weather is still good but the crowds and rates have dropped.  The second best time is Spring when the mustard plants are all in bloom.  This is a “gotta see it believe it”, but everywhere you look you’ll see brilliant bright mustard plants with eye-popping color!  It’s like you stepped into an HD Plasma TV and someone turned the colors on full blast!  There will be no grapes on the vines, but you hardly notice

if you want discounts on hotels, prefer to avoid the most tourists and don’t mind potentially rainy days, visit during the off-season between December and March. To skip traffic, even during summer and fall, plan your trip for a weekdays.

Note: Everyone wants discount coupons these days, and who can blame them with most wineries charging at least $10 per person and some charging $20!  A good place to find both St Helena or  Napa  wine tasting coupons is right here or now there is an app with all the coupons right here!

Known for mud baths and mineral water, Calistoga is also home to an impressive collection of wineries. If you’re visiting Calistoga for your first time then you’re in for a treat, because it produces some of the region’s most complex wines.

Canard Vineyards (1016 Dunaweal Ln Calistoga, CA 94515) Canard has been growing grapes for others and making their own bold, easy-drinking wines for almost 30 years. While these coveted bottles are now fully allocated, you can still sign up for their shipments and attend private tastings. Call ahead for an appointment and be sure you plan enough time to relax and enjoy the views from the patio at the vineyard tasting home.

A more personal tasting than most wineries. They sit you at a table and serve you at the table. A new glass for each wine and a thorough explanation of the wine. More important is that the wines are very nice. You are not rushed and the people (Bradley) are informative and welcoming.

Amici Cellars (3130 Old Lawley Toll Rd Calistoga, CA 94515) Amici Cellars is the perfect compliment to a visit to Jericho Canyon as it’s just a bit further north and has an array of well-made wines at varying prices. Aptly named by the group of good friends that started the winery, Amici is a welcoming, unassuming spot and their small production wines can be found at select locations around the country. The outdoor setting has a spectacular view of the Palisades.

Larkmead Vineyards is situated on the valley floor in a location that isn’t far from Highway 29 and other wineries but somehow feels as though you’re on a vineyard in the middle of nowhere. The tranquil vibes and modern farmhouse architecture find a sweet balance between stylish luxury and homey charm, and the wines here are tasty from the get-go but also worth collecting.

Tasting $25 fee is fairly reasonable, and there’s no hard sell but the fee it can be waived if you spent $100 with respect to purchasing bottles or joining their wine club. The staff at the wine tastings are very knowledgeable not only about Montelena’s wines but also about other wineries as well.

In addition to Montelena’s being famous for having bested French white wines in a 1976 wine judging in Paris, the beautiful Chinese gardens are worth a visit. When I stopped by, there didn’t seem to be any restrictions on who could access the gardens, so they’re a welcome way to entertain designated drivers or non-drinkers in your party, or to walk off the buzz after you’re done tasting. Definitely a recommended destination for anyone seeking to increase their knowledge of California wines.
